Kindle Wireless Reading Device

Kindle Wireless Reading DeviceWhen it comes to reading, I would do anything to encourage the kids – even if that means giving them a cool gadget. The young kids seem to prefer reading online, on computers, or even on their iPhone. The 2nd generation Kindle from Amazon would fit in just perfectly.

First of all, Kindle’s screen is sharp with no glare or backlight. While my eyes get tired in only a few minutes of reading on a computer, I can read Kindle for hours and my eyes feel fine – just like reading normal paper books.

The navigation is excellent on Kindle. You can easily search text within an book, across your library, or the web. That’s something you can’t do with paper books. It also has a build-in dictionary that let you look up words instantly. This would work out great for young readers.

With Kindle you can store up to 1500 books on this 10.2 ounce device and it’s thinner than an iPhone. That’s just amazing. I can carry my entire library of books with me. It even stores your personal documents. If you like audiobooks, you can also download them to Kindle and listen to them via headphones or Kindle’s speakers.

Kindle books are usually much less expensive than their paper counterparts so it ends up to be a significant saving. You don’t need to wait for the books to be shipped to you or go to the store to get them. It only takes less than a minute to download each book.

I also like the fact that you can add bookmarks and annotations. Since it’s digital, I can edit or delete them anytime I want, which I can’t do with paper books.

The free 3G wireless access is another winning point for Kindle. Don’t you just hate having to hunt for Wi-Fi hotspot? This is totally different. It works must like your cellphone. Just last week I took my boys to the doctors’ for the H1N1 vaccine. It was a two-hour wait and thanks to Kindle I was able to get some reading done. I even went online to the Kindle store to browse some new titles and download a few book samples.

Browsing through pages on Kindle is very easy. The 5-way controller (much like a joystick) for navigation takes a little time to get used to. But once you get a hang of it you will love it.

If you do decide to get a Kindle be sure to also get a Kindle Leather Cover. It’s cool looking and fits the Kindle perfectly. I felt it’s $30 well-spent to protect my new Kindle. There are tons of other accessories available but I think you can live without them just fine.

Since the introduction of the 9.7″ Kindle DX, Amazon has been slashed Kindle’s price and it’s now down over $150 to only $259 at time of this writing – perfect for older kids as a Christmas gift. If you are still on the fence, I would say “go get one.” You will be glad you did just like I was.
